A Surrey-al Find By a House Clearance Company

Just a few months ago, a house clearance company were sent in to clear a small terraced house in Surrey, due to the owners death. During the clearance, a member of the house clearance team found a gold locket which came to their attention amongst the clutter. They opened the locket and came across a lock of hair and a hand-written note inside it. The note stated:

‘Obtained by Admiral George Brine when in command of H.M.S Mosquito guarding Napoleon at St Helena; given by him to my mother; at her death in 1867 given by us to my brother Captain George Brine RN after whose death in 1889 it passed to his widow and at her death it came to me.’

The lock of greying hair and hand-written note were recently taken to auction from the small terraced house before it was due to be demolished, to discover that the hair was actually that of Napoleon Bonaparte. He seemed to have had a lock of hair cut and placed inside this locket during his exile period on the island of St Helena in the South Atlantic, succeeding the Battle of Waterloo. This unusual but nevertheless very interesting 200 year old find, raised huge interest at auction and later sold for £9,000.

Still, it is unknown as to how this piece came to have arrived in Surrey, and that is a mystery which will probably forever remained unsolved. Though, the authenticity of the piece has not be questioned as the provenance is cast iron. What a fantastic find for a beady-eyed house clearance member of staff from a house clearance company, who found this incredible item in the bi-centenary year of Waterloo.

Bomb Shell Dropped During House Clearance

The small village of Risbury is not normally known for its interruptions, but on Thursday (10th September), there was a strange interruption in this quiet village. A house clearance team undergoing a house clearance, near Leominster, discovered a World War II grenade. Thus, resulted in an area of Risbury being cordoned off when the grenade was spotted during the house clearance and the Police were duly summoned to the required address. A radius of 25 metres around the house was quickly taped off, the house emptied of people and members of the public held back at a safe distance. Bomb disposal experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) attended the scene extremely promptly, in order to assess the bomb.   Thankfully, during assessment, the bomb was found not to be live and the EOD announced that the grenade was actually empty. If it hadn’t been for the quick thinking of the house removal team, this story could have had such a different ending with a very dramatic result for both the house owner and the once, sleepy village.

          House Clearance Sheffield Case Study

We recently cleared a house that was incredibly dirty and full of unwanted possessions, household objects, and plenty of rubbish. As experts in house clearance Sheffield services, we have the sometimes unsavoury task of clearing houses that are in advanced stages of disrepair and full of rubbish!

Once our house clearance professionals had blitzed the place, removing everything and taking it away in one of our vans to be responsibly disposed of, the house looked quite different. Although far from liveable, and in need of some serious decoration and general care, the house is now an empty shell that can be turned into a home that can be lived in again.

Fully Clearing and Cleaning the Property

Our job was to fully clear the house of all the discarded items in the house, lifting and shifting it all out of the way so that the space could be thoroughly cleaned. Bags of rubbish were removed by our team, as well as food waste, old clothes and general household items such as bins and bathroom scales.

            WEEE Compliant House Clearance Sheffield

We even removed the old washing machine, as we have the capacity to take larger items such as this. It is actually illegal to take old electrical or electronic goods to landfill, as they can release toxins that have a negative impact on the environment. Therefore, it’s really important to make sure that the company that takes them away are WEEE compliant.

            House Clearance Company Sheffield

Clearance and Clean Up are WEEE compliant, and are able to offer a disposal and recycling solution for all electrical and electronic waste. We regularly collect a variety of items, including washing machines, as well as computers, LCD plasma and CRT monitors, games consoles, alarm systems and equipment, CCTV and security equipment, lighting, IT equipment, cookers and fridges, and air conditioning systems. Our service is a complete WEEE disposal services which also includes consignment notes where needed, processing of WEEE, disintegration to base metals, re-use of base metals, and re-use of IT equipment.

House Clearance Sheffield Report on the Clean Sheffield Campaign

              leave a comment

              Be Sociable, Share!

The campaign, called ‘Clean Sheffield’ was launched last week and will last approximately one year. The council hope that it will reduce the amount of rubbish that is being dropped all over the city, a problem that is particularly bad in parks and green spaces. According to the council, more than £100,000 per year is being spent by the local authority to deal with the littler problem in parks alone.

As rubbish removal and house clearance Sheffield experts, Clearance and Clean Up think that this campaign is a positive step in the right direction for the city of Sheffield. It’s such a shame that litter is such a massive problem and takes up so much time and money that could be spent elsewhere. Hopefully, with the right education, and with enough people setting a good example with regard to the responsible disposal of litter, the problem of litter in the city can be improved.

                Keeping Communities Clear of Rubbish

The campaign ‘Clean Sheffield’ will also praise the volunteers and groups who work hard to keep communities clear of rubbish and encourage more people to follow their example. According to the cabinet member for environment Terry Fox, there are many people who go out every day to collect rubbish locally. He said: “If everybody took a little bit more pride in their city and didn’t litter, that would make a massive difference.”

The massive anti-littering campaign has been launched in Sheffield in an attempt to clean up the city. Sheffield residents are being urged to ‘take pride in their neighbourhoods’ in order to prevent the thousands of tonnes of litter that is dumped and dropped on the streets of Sheffield every year. The appeal is also hoped to keep Sheffield’s parks and green spaces clean, of which there are over 800.

Arranging Litter Picks and Educating School Children

As well as educating children in schools and organising litter picks, the campaign is hoped to drive more people to report the problem and also to pick up rubbish if they see it lying on the ground. According to Councillor Fox, the issue of having more bins around the city would be ‘looked at’, as there are currently around 3,500 litter bins in Sheffield at the moment. He also said “This campaign is not about buying everyone a pair of litter pickers, it’s about capturing hearts and minds.”

Criteria for Choosing a Decent House Clearance Company in Sheffield

There are lots of ways that you could go about your house clearance, from skip hire services to man with a van. Before you embark on your house clearance Sheffield mission, it’s important you hire a company that will be suitable for your needs. If you’re looking for a reputable house clearance company in Sheffield, here are a few tips that should help you with your choice.

Site Visits to Establish an Accurate Quote

It’s sometimes tricky to offer a customer an accurate quote over the phone, and you run the risk of the formal quote differing from it upon arrival at the site. That’s why it’s a sensible idea to choose a company that offers free site visits, so that you can get an accurate quote and make a decision from there.

                    Lifting and Shifting

If you don’t want the hassle of moving all your unwanted items down stairs, outside, or to a convenient pick up area, why not choose a company who will do all the lifting and shifting for you? When you choose your house clearance company, simply make an enquiry as to whether they offer this as part of the service, and choose on that does.

Choose a House Clearance Company in your Coverage Area

When choosing a house clearance company to clear your property, ensure that their coverage area includes your property. Companies based further afield may charge more, or politely tell you that they are a bit too far away! For example, if you live in South Yorkshire, ensure that the company covers Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Chesterfield.

Public Make Sure they have Insurance

It’s also important to ensure that the company you choose has public liability insurance. This type of insurance protects you and your family, as well as the public, against damage to your property and to yourself. For example, if a house clearance company are moving a sofa out of the house and someone gets injured in the process, or something gets broken, you’ll be entitled to compensation.

                    Full Waste Carriers Licence

A reputable house clearance company who transports or disposes of waste for others has to have a waste carriers licence issued by the Environment Agency. In fact, they’re committing an offense if they don’t, and can be fined up to £5,000. Also, waste carriers licences have an expiry date, so it’s important that you ask the company you choose if it’s in date and valid.

                    House Clearance Company Sheffield

As a house clearance company in Sheffield that offers all of the above, from a full waste carriers licence to free site visits, please consider Clearance and Clean Up for your house clearance Sheffield.

Sheffield School Receives Litter Talk from MP Nick Clegg

According to a recent article in the Sheffield Star, Nick Clegg, who is the current Sheffield Hallam MP, has visited High Storrs School in Bents Green, Sheffield, to talk about the Bin It! Campaign. The scheme itself aims to educate students about taking responsibility for litter, and has been developed by the chewing gum company Wrigleys, in partnership with the education consultancy Rapport. The Bin It! campaign is aimed at 11 – 13 year olds, and hopes to ‘encourage them to think about why people litter, reflect on their own behaviour and emphasise the importance of caring for their local area.’

                        Disposing of Rubbish Correctly

It’s been well reported in local and national media that the amount of discarded rubbish littering the streets of the UK appears to risen dramatically. As rubbish removal and house clearance Sheffield experts, it’s clear that littering has become more of a problem, and that one of the possible solutions to this may be the education of young people to encourage them to take responsibility for disposing of rubbish correctly.

Bin It! said “We use a team of actors to engage and educate young people about the problem of litter. This hands-on approach encourages pupils to make positive choices about the responsible disposal of litter in their community. Bin It! has a proven record of success, with results showing that a significant proportion of pupils think more about litter disposal having taken part in the session.”

                        Advice from Sheffield City Council

The local Council have also listed ways that residents can help to keep Sheffield tidy which include, not dropping litter on the streets, ensuring that dustbins and wheelie bins are not over filled, clearing up after your dog, and not disposing of household rubbish in litter bins. They also recommend teaching young people in the family to dispose of litter responsibly, echoing the message sent out by the Bin It campaign and Nick Clegg at High Storrs School.

Sheffield Flat Named Most Disgusting by National Press, Report House Clearance Sheffield

According to an article in a national newspaper, 2C in the Froggatt Apartments at Endcliffe Village in Sheffield contains an indoor compost heap, empty beer cans, piles of rubbish, and a stolen traffic cone. The flat has been named the most disgusting student flat in Britain.

The images show a communal kitchen area strewn with week’s worth of dirty cooking equipment and utensils, empty bottles and left over, decaying food. The living room is littered with empty bottles of wine, beer cans, glasses and mugs, as well as playing cards – apparent evidence of drinking games before their nights out at the student union. However, they do have a large plasma screen TV, which sits on top of an empty beer keg.

As experts in rubbish removal and house clearance Sheffield, Clearance and Clean Up see a great many flats and houses in need of a good clear out and clean, but we can’t say we’ve ever come across an indoor compost heap before! But students are notorious for being untidy and living in unsanitary conditions, to the point where it has become an ingrained cultural joke.

                            University Student Accommodation

The University of Sheffield has an excellent reputation for its student flats, with the newly built Endcliffe Village housing more than 3,000 of the university’s students in a complex of flats and apartment buildings. An en suite single room in one of the flats in the Froggatt building costs students £5,294.94 for 42 weeks of the academic year.

One resident of the flat defended the mess by saying that the stacks of filthy cutlery and plates that have been turned into ashtrays ‘adds character’, while another admitted the only time the sink has been emptied was when someone urinated in it.  It’s got so bad that even the cleaner refuses to enter the kitchen, calling it “a disgrace”. According to the article, the flat has failed its last 2 communal area inspections.

As experts in rubbish removal and house clearance Sheffield, it’s a real shame to see areas such as this suffering due to fly tipping and littering. Sadly, littering is a common problem in many areas and simply tidying up after people doesn’t address the root cause of the problem. Educating residents about the correct disposal of rubbish and litter is incredibly important, and learning about the effect of the littering on the community is important too.

Rubbish Strewn Streets on Sheffield Estate

An article in The Sheffield Star was recently published regarding rubbish problems in the city. The newspaper has recently reported on the rubbish strewn streets of a troubled Sheffield estate. The Page Hall estate has been plagued by serious litter problems in recent weeks, and extra staff have had to be drafted in to tackle the problems of fly tipping, litter and rubbish in the area.

According to the article, the residents of the estate are fed up and worried about the state of the streets, and fear that the workers brought in to sort the problem out are only ‘fire fighting’, rather than making a long term difference to the condition of the area.

According to the newspaper, the area has suffered since an influx of Roma Slovak families moved in to the area, and the way that they live has had a serious impact on the residents who have lived on the estate for years. Although the council is trying hard to make sure that educational work is taking place, the problem will not be solved ‘overnight’.

                                Fly Tipping and Graffiti

A resident of the area said that council staff cleared up a littered area of Hinde Street recently, but that just a day later the area had been fly-tipped with the contents of a skip, graffiti had been scrawled on the walls and a black bag of rubbish had been dumped. The resident said “This is an absolute disgrace to wake up to. When is the enough-is-enough mindset going to come to the forefront and let the tired, stressed folk here have a bit of peace, quiet and cleanliness.”

A pile of waste has built up in Sheffield city centre in recent weeks, leading to problems with vermin and the spread of rubbish throughout the street. The Sheffield Star has reported that John White, who works at Cutlers’ Hall in the city centre said: “This rubbish has been lying around for a few weeks. You would think this sort of behaviour would be stamped on quickly.” The O2 phone shop on Fargate in Sheffield city centre has been accused of leaving huge piles of rubbish behind their shop, adding to the litter problem in the city.

                                    House Clearance Sheffield Experts

As house clearance Sheffield experts, Clearance and Clean Up have noticed that Sheffield city centre has been plagued by unwanted waste and rubbish recently, most of which lies around for weeks before it is removed. There has also been an issue with the homeless ripping open the bin bags in their search for food and valuables, therefore spreading the rubbish around further.

A spokesman from 02 has responded to the complaint and admitted that they were responsible for the rubbish. John Mailey from 02 said “Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding between the waste company and the landlord, who manages the collection of waste from our shop, resulting in a missed collection. The problem has been resolved and the waste cleared. We apologise if this may have caused any inconvenience.”

                                    The Keep Britain Tidy Campaign

Keep Britain Tidy was created 60 years ago, and wants more government action on litter instead of leaving it to local authorities. Some councils hand out hundreds of fines a year for littering, while others tread more carefully because of negative publicity. More than 63,000 fines were handed out in councils in England in 2012.

Unfortunately, litter is a problem all over the UK. According to a recent survey by Keep Britain Tidy, almost two thirds of us are litter bugs. However, only 28% are actually willing to admit that they drop their rubbish. A massive £1bn a year is spent on collecting litter in England alone, and the survey expressed particular concern over the amount of littler created by cigarettes, fast food, soft drinks, sweet and chocolate bar wrappers and crisps packets.

Clearance and Clean Up house clearance Sheffield dispose of waste correctly, including recycling as much as they can. All of their prices include labour and disposal fee, there are no hidden charges, and you can rest assured that your waste goes to a proper licensed disposal facility.

Last week’s episode of BBC 2’s programme ‘Wastemen’ saw bin men and waste disposal teams in Newcastle battling with the amount of rubbish now produced by residents to be collected. According to the programme, every household in the country puts a tonne of rubbish out for the bin men each year, and bin men and council enforcement officers are struggling to cope with the strain.

                                        House Clearance Sheffield

As professional rubbish removal and house clearance Sheffield experts, Clearance and Clean Up watched Newcastle’s domestic rubbish being taken to the Byker Waste Processing Plant, in the outskirts of the city. Inside, the team work hard to get as much use out of the rubbish as possible, which is an enormous operation using giant sieves, moving belts and massive magnets. Amazingly, a use is found for approximately 80% of the rubbish sent there. Food waste is turned to compost, metals are removed, and everything else is squashed in bales and turned into refuse-derived fuel to be used to generate electricity in power stations. The refuse-derived fuel is then shipped across the North Sea to be used in Sweden.

                                        The Rise in Recycling

Although recycling rates in the UK have risen over the past several years, they appear to be stalling at around 44%. The Guardian newspaper recently reported that UK households appear to have given up trying to recycle more of their rubbish, with official statistics suggesting that recycling rates in England have stalled.

The European target of recycling 50% of waste by 2020 will more than likely be missed, and follows warnings from MPs that the government needs to take action to nudge the stalled recycling rates up.
