Instructions about how to back up and export webmail emails from Horde

If you’re using Horde to manage your webmail emails and want to back them up, you may have realised that it seems to be not as easy to do as you’d hope without going through and forwarding email groups individually

Fortunately, it is actually pretty simple if you know how to do it and here’s how:

  1. Click on ‘mail’ on the left menu
  2. Click on ‘folders’ from the top menu
  3. Tick the boxes of the folders you’d like to export
  4. From the drop-down box ‘actions’ select ‘download’

This will download your emails in an ‘MBOX’ container file format

Alternatively, if you want to forward your messages in groups; view the emails you’d like to forward, tick the box next to them and then click on ‘forward’ which should be just above the top email

South Yorkshire Renewable Energy - suppliers and installers of Solar Panels and Underfloor Heating

Based in Sheffield, South Yorkshire Renewable Energy are an established and well respected supplier and installer of solar panels, solar thermal units and under-floor heating

Having just launched their new website, they are continuing their expansion and will be opening their show-home in banner Cross, Sheffield later in the year. Here, you’ll be able to see the renewable energy technology in action including a wall-mounted meter showing how much energy is being produced by their solar panels

Director Richard Senior said “With escalating fuel prices and ever increasing heating bills, there’s never been a better time to install Solar Panels and Under-floor Heating. Both these technologies will help slash bills and are also therefore great for the environment.”

“The government’s guaranteed feed-in tariff also means that you’ll also be paid for producing your own electricity. According to recent calculations by Miles Brignall of the Guardian, a typical Solar Panel installation costing £12,500 will also give you a return of at least £25,000”

As an authorised and preferred partner of AVC Energy and Rehau, South Yorkshire Renewable Energy supply and install only the highest quality solar panels and underfloor heating solutions

In 2011, South Yorkshire Renewable Energy will be providing and installing solar panels on 1000 homes for free. To apply or for more information, please call them on 0800 678 5789 or visit their website at www.south-yorkshire-renewable-energy.co.uk

Phishing emails – tell-tale signs it’s not from who it says it’s from

Emails aren't always from who they say they're from!

Emails aren't always from who they say they're from!

I’ve just received quite an ingenious phishing email… well it’s slightly more intelligently conceived and implemented than the usual type

Yesterday I made an order on Amazon and today I get an email, pertaining to be from Amazon, telling me that my order has been cancelled!

Firstly, even though I’m sure that me receiving an Amazon order cancellation the day after making an order with them is purely coincidence, for me, as for many other people, Amazon account for the majority of everything I personally spend online so the chances of me having made a recent purchase are pretty high. Anyway, even if I hadn’t, my first reaction would have been ‘has my account been hacked?’ so I would have wanted to find out.

Secondly, it’s perfectly within the realms of possibilities that an order may have been cancelled –cards get stopped, vendors run out of stock… there are numerous reasons for this so you’d have no reason to, on first glance, assume that the email was legitimate.

Thirdly, the spelling and grammar was correct. On the one hand it amazes me have many grammatical mistakes there are in the average phishing email. I’m sure some of these are to avoid detection by spam filters but many other are simple mistakes that even pasting the text into Google or Word would fix. On the other hand, anyone stupid or foolhardy enough to think that to conduct a phishing campaign is a good idea can’t be the sharpest of twigs!

There are some massive tell-tale signs, though, that this email is not from who it says it’s from!

The one that first alerted me was that Amazon don’t send account and order notifications in that format using that font. If you’re on their mailing list, you’ll no doubt get your ‘deals of the week’ in rich text but everything else pertaining to your account is in a pretty standard format – order confirmations, despatch notes, etc. – will be standard format. I wouldn’t be surprised if the person who sent this email had never ordered anything from Amazon!

The other this I always do is check the domain within the links. This one wasn’t Amazon so I wasn’t clicking it

You can also use your common sense and examine the email a bit more closely. I have 8 email account sI use through Outlook and many of these are catch-all addresses. I only, however, have one email address registered with Amazon. If I get an email pertaining to be from Amazon to an email address I haven’t got registered with them, I know it’s probably not legitimate.

The advice is as always; if you get an email asking you to click on a link to go to a site; don’t do it. If you’re not sure, open your browser and go directly to the website. Log in there and then check your messages or account status directly.

  2. With the phone turned off, press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then briefly press the POWER button.

How to remove back cover, SIM card and SD card from Nokia 5800

When it’s time to upgrade to a new phone it’s important to delete the information on your old one to help keep your private information such as email addresses and contacts safe

To format your phone and delete all the information in the memory there are two options.

The first should work for most recent Nokia phones:

1. Dial *#7370#
2. Type in your lock code. The default number is 12345. (If you’ve changed this number and forgotten the new one, this format
method won’t help)

the phone will restart back to the original out-of-the-box settings and your information will be wiped.

The second method works with the Nokia 5800 V. 20.0.012

1. Turn your phone off
2. Press power button to turn on
3. As the phone starts booting up, hold down the red and green buttons on the front together with the camera button on the side.
You’ll still need your lock code for this method

Once restored to factory settings, don’t forget to remove your SD card and SIM.

To remove the SIM and SD card:

1. Take off the back cover by putting your thumbnail in the notch on the back at the bottom and pulling backwards away from the phone. The back cover will open like a book as opposed to sliding open
2. Take out the battery
3. Open the side access doors (they’re on the left-had side as your looking at the phone from the front
4. Push out the SIM card by putting the stylus into the hole under the battery compartment
5. Push the SD card in with your nail or the stylus and it will pop out

It should now be ready to pass on

How to view and disable HTC start-up processes

Startup Auditor allows you to view and disable your HTC start-up processes

When you boot your HTC phone with Andriod operating system, it’s a fair bet that you’ll have a whole load of applications starting that you don’t need or want to run.

There is, however, a very simple and quick application that allows you to disable start-up processes very easily.

Simply download ‘Startup Auditor’ and install. You will now be able to choose which applications start-up when your phone boots.

The software has a trial version with ads (and other restrictions) but the paid-for version also has a trial period. To buy it costs around 63p (at the time of writing)

Take another look at the Amazon Kindle

New Amazon Kindle wireless reading device

New Amazon Kindle wireless reading device

If you’re anything like me you’ve probably always dismissed the idea of the Amazon Kindle before looking into it in any real detail. I have, however, looked into it in a bit more detail recently and am very impressed by the spec! The following might just sway you too:

  • It’s got a high-contrast super-bright screen that’s as easy to read in bright sunlight as paper so can be used almost anywhere
  • It has up-to a months battery life so you’re not tied to a plug socket
  • It has Wi-Fi so you can download books direct. The Kindle 3G (3G + Wi-Fi) can also download books and access the Kindle store for free over 3G–with no monthly bills or annual contracts
  • It holds up-to 3,500 books in its memory
  • Its wireless so doesn’t require any computer connection although can be connected using USB if required
  • And the best bit? It only costs £109 for the standard Wi-Fi version and only £149 for the Wi-Fi + 3G version!

What are you waiting for? Click here for more information

Here are the other technical specifications (Wi-Fi version/Wi-Fi+3G version)

  • Display size: 6 inch diagonal
  • Overall size: 109mm x 123mm x 8.5mm
  • Weight: 241/247grams
  • Capacity: 3,500 books
  • Battery life with wireless turned off: 1 month
  • Battery life with wireless turned on: 10 days
  • New book download time: 60 seconds
  • Text to speak: yes (this means it’ll read your book to you)

HTC Desire HD crashing when making calls

HTC Desire HD crashes when making calls

HTC Desire HD crashes when making calls

If you’re one of the lucky ones with a new HTC Desire HD phone you may have noticed there is a rather annoying bug related to the proximity sensor.

Basically, you make a call and the screen immediately turns off and becomes unresponsive

It seems like the phone has crashed but it continues to stay connected and make the call. None of the buttons work such as the ‘home’ button and the only way to ‘wake up’ the phone is to plug in a 3.5mm jack to wake the screen up or just take the battery out

In the longer term, you should update the software. To do this, connect to a WI-FI network then:

Go to ‘Applications’ > ‘settings’ > ‘about phone’ > ‘System software updates’

‘Check now’ for updates then install any available software updates.

The phone will download and install the update then restart after a few minutes.

The future of websites

I predict that video will revolutionise the internet in the same way that it revolutionised pop music. There. I’ve said it.

In fact, you can already see this happening – many websites prefer to include a video as a way of presenting their products and services as this caters to bigger cross section of visitors. This doesn’t, however, mean you have to exclude the other content – it’s an extra! Readers can still read, scanners can still scan but, with video, those visitors who respond better to a visual narrative have a more engaging way of finding out about you.

To this end, Seven Creative will shortly be launching a new video production service providing professionally filmed, edited and produced video presentations for your website.

Prices start from £400 – please email or call us for more information on 0114 383 0711
