Shop Signs Sheffield Announce New Shopping Area in Sheffield

As shop sign makers in Sheffield, we’ve commented before on the many plans that Sheffield Council have dreamt up and then shelved over the past few years. It will be interesting to see if this project gets off the ground, as many others have fallen to the wayside for various reasons. The reaction from Sheffield residents is understandably cool; they’ve seen plans announced before that have never materialised, and many are sceptical about the future of these new developments.

According to a recent article in the Sheffield Star, new plans have been announced for a £480 million shopping district that is set to transform Sheffield’s city centre. Streets such as Pinstone Street and Cross Burgess Street will be home to new contemporary fashion stores, setting the tone for the whole of the city centre. In addition, there will be a new anchor department store, along with plenty of new retail and leisure outlets.

Shopping Area in City Centre

Simon Green, who is Sheffield Council’s executive director for place commented on the plans, saying that they will provide a new, attractive shopping area for the centre of Sheffield. “The design merges with Sheffield’s award-winning public spaces and world renowned cultural assets – including City Hall, The Crucible and The Lyceum theatres – and links key retail pitches in the city centre from The Moor through to Fargate. This will complement the new shopping facilities and provide food and drink, office and residential space to extend the city centre’s attraction as an evening entertainment option.

Sheffield was ranked as 43rd in the UK in a recent retail study, alongside towns such as Northampton and Stoke on Trent. But the new plans will hopefully see it jumping to 32nd. The scheme is also expected to boost business for other popular shopping areas in the city, for example the Devonshire Quarter and The Moor. According to the newspaper, the council is currently in conversation with potential strategic development partners, and is hoping to announce their chosen partner in autumn of this year.

Social Media Management Sheffield Discuss the Value of Pinterest

In addition to accounts for personal users, Pinterest also allows businesses to create business pages that they can use to promote their company online. These pages could be described as ‘virtual shopfronts’, allowing Pinterest users to browse items for sale on their website. And it’s big business; brand studies have continued to show that Pinterest is more effective at driving salesthan other forms of social media. As well as images, business pages can also include various data, topics and information such as prices of products, ratings of movies or ingredients for recipes.

How Pinterest Works

It’s free to sign up, and Pinterest users can upload, save, sort and organise images, or ‘pins’ through collections known as pin boards. Users can browse the content of others, and save individual pins to their own pin boards using the ‘Pin it’ button. If browsing a website other than Pinterest, images can be pinned to users’ pin boards using a ‘Pin it’ button that can be downloaded to the bookmark bar on your web browser. Users can also ‘repin’ pins from others on their own pin boards.

Social Media Marketing World 2015

Last month, San Diego hosted the “Social Media Marketing World 2015″ conference, where several social media professionals shared their expertise on established and developing trends in social media. According to the conference, Pinterest has been dubbed ‘the new Google’, due to the fact that it has a powerful search which many people actually turn to before the search engine giant. It might sound unbelievable, but the reason for this is that many people simply prefer the visual search results that Pinterest offers. Pins on Pinterest also have great longevity too, for example, if you share a pin today, it will still be coming up in search results weeks, months and even years later.

Specialist Shops to be Replaced with Flats on Devonshire Street Sheffield

According to the Sheffield Star, the specialist shops on Devonshire Street will be replaced with flats and other shops, which has caused massive public outcry in opposition to the plans. Objectors to the demolition say that the impact on the area means that the street will become ‘like every single high street in the country’ and that it would be ‘utter madness to demolish one of the truly individual parts of Sheffield.’

Image Sign Studio recently reported on the plans to demolish a number of shops on Devonshire Street in Sheffield, a popular area of the city centre with an eclectic mix of independent retail shops and quirky boutiques. As experts in the design and manufacture of shop signs Sheffield, they have been keeping a close eye on the developments of this story, and are sad to announce that the Sheffield Star have reported that despite nearly 20,000 objections, the shops will be knocked down.

The Devonshire Quarter

A report to the planning committee says “Though occupiers of the existing retail units perfectly reflect the city’s aspirations for the Devonshire Quarter and undeniably have a part to play in creating an attractive, viable and varied city centre, the planning system does not exist to protect the private interests of one person against the activities of another. Provided a retail frontage is retained, the loss of the specific businesses is not a planning matter.”

Opposition to Planning Application

Coda Planning, agent for the developers Primesite Ltd insist that the development would ‘rejuvenate’ a block falling into ‘disrepair’ and improve the area. According to Sheffield Council, the online petition was the largest ever connected to a planning application since the Council began keeping logs, and raised a huge 18,337 signatures. Unfortunately, planners say that according to the law, only views based on ‘material planning considerations’ can be given weight, meaning that the buildings will be destroyed and replaced regardless of the signatures received in opposition.

Shop Signs Sheffield

As professional makers of shop signage Sheffield, Image Sign Studio thinks it’s a great shame that this vibrant and eclectic area of the city will be replaced with flats and other shops. The director of Coda Planning has assured Sheffield residents that the building’s design will respect the street’s character and allow occupancy to continue.
